About the Organization

The International Centre for Research in Agroforestry – ICRAF (also known by the brand name ‘World Agroforestry Centre’) is a Centre of scientific excellence that harnesses the benefits of trees for people and the environment. Leveraging the world’s largest repository of agroforestry science and information, we develop knowledge practices, from farmers’ fields to the global sphere, to ensure food security and environmental sustainability.

ICRAF's work also addresses many of the issues being tackled by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that aim to eradicate hunger, reduce poverty, provide affordable and clean energy, and protect life on land and combat climate change. We receive our funding from a wide range of investors, including governments, private foundations, international organizations and regional development banks. Our work is conducted with partners from several scientific and development institutions. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, ICRAF operates six regional programs and conducts research in 33 other countries around the developing world.

About the Proposal

CIFOR-ICRAF is leading the implementation of the Trees Outside Forests in India (TOFI) Program - a five-year joint initiative by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) of the Government of India. The TOFI program aims to expand the area under trees outside forests to enhance livelihoods and ecosystem services across seven participating states, namely Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Haryana, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh.

Given the escalating global concern regarding climate change and the promising role of trees outside forests and agroforestry in mitigating its impacts, it is imperative to empower individuals with knowledge and cultivate a profound understanding of the challenges and solutions at hand. An interpretation center emerges as an innovative tool for experiential learning, that will contribute to the enhanced knowledge of the target group concerning trees outside forests and agroforestry.

The Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF) seeks proposals from qualified agencies for the development of an Agroforestry Interpretation Centre at ICAR-Central Agroforestry Research Institute (ICAR-CAFRI), Jhansi. The Interpretation Centre aims to serve as an educational hub and resource centre to promote awareness and understanding of trees outside forests and agroforestry practices among stakeholders, including farmers, researchers, policymakers, students, and the general public.

ICAR-CAFRI is a multidisciplinary premier research institute of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) with a major focus on integrating trees, crops and livestock on the same farmland. The Institute is in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh has a total area of 254.859 acres (214.079 research farms and 40.78 office & residential areas). CAFRI is the only dedicated research institute in the country working on key research areas of agroforestry with 31 scientists, 16 technical, 12 administrative, and 8 skilled supporting staff as its sanctioned cadre strength. CAFRI coordinates the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Agroforestry which has a network of 37 centres covering different agroecological regions of the country.
