We currently work in fourteen countries of Asia and Africa. The countries with a desperate lack of resources to educate their children. Since our inception, Room to Read has impacted over 16.6 million children across 20,000 schools, published 1614 new children’s book titles, and reached over 50,000 girls through our Girls’ Education program. The global headquarters is located in San Francisco, having smaller fundraising offices in New York, Hong Kong, London, Mumbai, Sydney, and Tokyo. The Asia Regional Office located in New Delhi.

Room to Read India Trust was established in 2003. Its headquarter is in New Delhi and currently has operations across eleven states, viz. Andhra Pradesh & Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Room to Read India has an annual budget of approximately 51 crores with staff numbers around 600. We collaborate with local governments to ensure that primary school children can become independent readers and girls can complete secondary school with the skills necessary to negotiate key life decisions. In the past fifteen years, Room to Read has benefited over 3.9 million children and reached more than 9600 schools with 20342 trained teachers on library and Instruction, published over 194 titles of children’s literature in local language and provided material, academic and life skills support to over 18000 girls (approx.). Room to Read has received several awards and recognition over the years including recognition as one of the top ten NGOs to work for during the past five years by the Great Places to Work Institute.

Position Overview:

The Library Coach (LBC) will be responsible for supporting and coaching teachers, librarians, and principals to adopt new ways of working with children to increase their habit of reading and for setting up and ensuring a highly functioning library. They will report to the Literacy Program Operations Officer/Literacy Program Operations Associate and will not have any direct reports. This position is based at project location (District/Block/Mandal/Cluster).

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Develop a thorough understanding of Room to Read’s Literacy program design
  • Manage, monitor and support library program intervention across assigned project schools and ensure adherence to the program design.
  • Provide support and conduct teachers training.
  • Write monthly reports to supervisor on program implementation.
  • Provide reflective feedback on program design and implementation (especially with respect to progress towards outcomes) and demonstrate a solution-oriented approach
  • Undertake school visits every day, except for days when on official travel and leave.
  • Support the initial set up of the library, including site verification (if necessary), organizing community meetings, raising requisition and coordinating delivery of furniture, books and stationery.
  • Collaborates with school to support minor improvements to the library space (e.g. painting)
  • Participates in regular teacher and librarian training (both center based and school based) related to the Literacy program implementation
  • Regularly observes and models good library management practices and systems to designated librarian (i.e. book leveling, reading activities, check out system, etc.)
  • Regularly observes, demonstrates and coaches teachers and librarians in the implementation of the library period and reading activities
  • Supports and participates in Family & Community Engagement (F&CE) activities like literacy events, parent meetings and other community activities; also coordinates formation and training of Child Management Committees.
  • Regularly provides to the principal/headmaster an update on progress and coaches them on ways to support teachers and ensure longer term sustainability of literacy outcomes within the school
  • Collects monitoring data (both regular and periodic, as required), ensuring high data quality
  • Analyze school level data and information on a regular basis collected during regular school visit, identify corrective action to be taken and build it into school level planning.
  • Ensuring effective usage of Home as a learning space material through home visits and community visits and home visits
  • Conducting Library reading camps in school holidays at school level and community level.
  • Attend review meetings at block/district/state/national level, as required, and complete all programmatic and financial reports on a timely manner. 
  • Supports donor visits through project demonstration and presentation
  • Document best practices and lessons learned and share with the Literacy Program team
    • Report to the Literacy Program Operations Officer/Associate 
  • Participate in any other activities which may be required to be undertaken to fulfill the objectives of the organization

Timeline:

Consultancy assignment duration will be from 1st August 2024 to 30th April 2025.

Deliverables by the consultant:

The Roles & Responsibilities of the consultant will be primarily on implementation of the library program in around 12 schools in Sangareddy district. His/Her 60% of time will be on frequent school visits to look after the program activities execution with the support of school staff, home as a learning space, conducting community libraries etc. 20% of the focus areas would be on providing the data collection from the schools for documenting in the monthly reports. 20% of the work would be focus on attending for the meetings conducted by the district officials, RTR trainings/ workshops/ review meetings, and liasoning with the mandal level officials as per the requirement for effective implementation of the program.

Other agreements by the consultant:

  • Work from Sadashivpet and Sangareddy urban mandals of Sangareddy district and be willing to travel to the project locations as per project requirements.
  • Participate in review meetings/trainings by Room to Read.
  • Share the status of work done on monthly basis to the program associate.
  • Participate in debriefing meetings with Room to Read to discuss data collection experience, raise any areas of potential concern, and recommend any improvements to the process for future.
  • Securely store the data with full confidentiality and submit the entire data with the program Department of Room to Read India Trust. 
  • Take prior consent of the stakeholders before performing the assignment in every aspect.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education / social sciences or equivalent
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience, especially in development projects
  • Teaching experience at primary level preferred
  •  Knowledge about education in general and language development/ literacy in particular
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  •  Good interpersonal skills and a team player
  •  Basic project management and analytical skills

Technical Evaluation Criteria:

  • Professional Consultant / Academic background with demonstrated experience in primary school pedagogy and teaching learning process in the government schools.
  • Demonstrated experience in Classroom observation of teachers to improve literacy skills/reading habit and providing constructive feedback. In addition, documentation of reports, case stories and anecdotes.  (Assessed by the work samples submitted and review of CV) Score - out of 5. 
  • Understanding of scope of work. Score - out of 5 (Assessed through the synopsis of proposal/assignments shared during interviews) 
  • Ability to juggle multiple assignments, work with limited supervision and to meet the given deadlines and adhere to the RtR guidelines. Score - out of 5 (Assessed through interview responses)
