Wetlands International South Asia is a leading non-profit organisation dedicated to the conservation and wise use of wetlands in the South Asia region. Wetlands International South Asia office seeks applications for the position of Deputy Director. This is a full-time position based in New Delhi.

Job Description

The Deputy Director will be the principal technical representative of Wetlands International South Asia and will be responsible for developing and implementing programmatic work in line with the regional and global strategy. The incumbent will lead a multidisciplinary team and expert network providing evidence-based scientific and technical advice and support national and state governments, wetland authorities, and civil society in various wetland conservation and management aspects. The position offers significant opportunities for influencing the science and practice of wetland conservation in the region and immense potential to innovate, replicate and promote integrated approaches, working across various sectors and disciplines.

The candidate needs to have a keen intellect, significant experience in developing and executing successful strategies relevant to wetlands conservation and management, need to have well-developed project design & management skills, knowledge/use of project monitoring and evaluation tools, experience in managing and leading interdisciplinary teams, experience in government agency outreach, and the ability to raise funds.

Job Responsibilities

  • Maintain an overview of technical program implementation and ensure good quality outcomes of financed projects and programs adhering to and contributing to Wetlands International South Asia strategy
  • Support, through innovative suggestions and programme development ideas, development and implementation of the strategy of Wetlands International South Asia ensuring adherence and corporate ownership within the organisation
  • Help the Director in preparing required quality material to be able to participate effectively as a member of the Global Board of Wetlands International, working collaboratively with other Wetlands International offices, regional and global partners
  • Prepare, under the guidance of the Director, the annual work plan and budget of the organisation
  • Support Director in developing new initiatives and partnerships that contribute to Wetlands International South Asia strategy, mobilize financial resources and enhance the presence and effectiveness of the organisation
  • Mobilize and manage fundraising initiatives and relationships with donors, other offices and the Wetlands International Global office under the guidance of the Director
  • Support the Director in maintaining standards of project development, communication and personnel management
  • Under the guidance of the Director, develop and lead the implementation of the communications strategy of the organization
  • Help Director in drafting documents and reports for Wetlands International South Asia Governing Body

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • Masters in life sciences, environmental sciences, natural resources management, aquatic ecology, hydrology, wetland economics and relevant fields
  • Good record of publications
  • Part of the current professional networks relevant to the position

Experience

  • Not less than eight years relevant to wetlands conservation and management. Candidates with a broader portfolio of experience in natural resources management but with proven experience and understanding of wetlands and sustainable development matters could also be considered.
  • At least five years of team leading experience, including objective setting, motivating, setting objectives and managing performance.
  • Experience in designing, implementing, and directing complex or multiple projects of strategic importance, including supervising multidisciplinary professionals and coordinating partners' work while meeting deadlines. 
  • Experience in conceiving and implementing strategic and creative initiatives.
  • Ability to communicate clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages, including translating complex issues into concise and clear messages.
