About the Organization

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), headed by the Prime Minister of India, is the apex body for Disaster Management in India. Setting up of NDMA and the creation of an enabling environment for institutional mechanisms at the State and District levels is mandated by the Disaster Management Act, 2005. NDMA is mandated to lay down the policies, plans and guidelines for Disaster Management. India envisions the development of an ethos of Prevention, Mitigation, Preparedness and Response.

The Indian government strives to promote a national resolve to mitigate the damage and destruction caused by natural and man-made disasters, through sustained and collective efforts of all Government agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations and People’s participation. This is planned to be accomplished by adopting a Technology-Driven, Pro-Active, Multi-Hazard and Multi-Sectoral strategy for building a Safer, Disaster Resilient and Dynamic India.

Job Description

The Fisheries and Coastal Resilience Professional will be responsible for providing technical guidance and policy recommendations for disaster risk reduction and resilience building in the fisheries and coastal sectors. This includes developing and implementing sustainable fisheries management strategies, supporting coastal ecosystem conservation efforts, and enhancing community resilience in the face of natural disasters such as floods, storms, and climate change impacts.

  • Consultants: Provide technical assistance in fisheries and coastal resilience projects, assist in research, and support policy development for disaster risk reduction (DRR) in fisheries and coastal ecosystems.
  • Senior Consultants: Lead initiatives on fisheries sustainability, aquatic ecosystem conservation, and DRR in coastal areas, developing strategies to integrate disaster resilience into fisheries and marine biodiversity management.
  • Lead Consultants: Oversee large-scale fisheries and coastal resilience projects, ensuring the integration of disaster risk reduction strategies into national policies on coastal and marine ecosystems.

Job Responsibilities

The Fisheries and Coastal Resilience Professional will work across different levels and will be expected to contribute to the following tasks and responsibilities, with variations in scope and leadership based on the level:

  • Fisheries Management: Provide expertise in managing fisheries resources to ensure their sustainability and disaster resilience. Consultants will support the development of DRR policies, Senior Consultants will lead sustainability and resilience programs, and Lead Consultants will integrate DRR strategies into national fisheries policies.
  • Aquatic Ecosystem Conservation: Advise on policies for the conservation of coastal and marine ecosystems to enhance disaster resilience. Consultants will assist in managing ecosystem-based approaches, Senior Consultants will lead conservation projects, and Lead Consultants will develop national strategies for ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction.
  • Fisheries Sustainability: Contribute to policy design for promoting sustainable and disasterresilient fishing practices. Consultants will assist in creating sustainability guidelines, Senior Consultants will oversee disaster resilience initiatives, and Lead Consultants will set standards for resilient and sustainable fisheries practices.
  • Marine Biodiversity: Support policies for safeguarding marine biodiversity and enhancing coastal resilience to natural disasters. Consultants will assist in biodiversity research, Senior Consultants will lead biodiversity conservation efforts, and Lead Consultants will provide strategic guidance for integrating biodiversity into disaster risk reduction strategies.
  • Fisheries Policy: Provide expertise in the development of policies for sustainable fisheries and disaster-resilient coastal ecosystems. Consultants will assist in drafting policies, Senior Consultants will lead policy development on disaster risk reduction, and Lead Consultants will guide national policy agendas for disaster resilience in fisheries and coastal areas.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

Education:

  • Master’s in Fisheries, Marine Science, or related field.
  • Certifications: Professional certification in Marine Biology, Fisheries Management, or related field.

Experiences:

  • Consultants: 3-7 years of experience in fisheries management, marine biodiversity conservation, or aquatic ecosystem research, with a focus on disaster resilience.
  • Senior Consultants: 8-12years of experience in fisheries sustainability, coastal resilience, or marine ecosystem management with disaster risk reduction (DRR) expertise.
  • Lead Consultants: 12+ years of experience in fisheries management, sustainable practices, marine biodiversity, and policy development related to disaster resilience in coastal areas.
