Work Fair and Free (WFF) is a non-profit organisation driven by a commitment to advance worker-centric knowledge and practice so that informal labour migration can become more secure and dignified.
Founded in 2022 and incubated by Aajeevika Bureau, a pioneering workers’ rights organisation with a long presence in the western Indian labour migration corridors, we carry out grounded and rigorous research, strategic grassroots practice, insightful policy work, and innovative teaching and training, drawing from our strong footprints across urban industrial centres and rural migration clusters.
Our research is strongly geared towards strengthening grassroots interventions and influencing the current policy paradigm on internal labour migration.

Current Openings
Work Fair and Free boasts of a highly committed, multi-disciplinary team led by senior researchers and labour practitioners. We are looking for young researchers to join our team across multiple locations as Associates and Senior Associates to contribute to our innovative and cutting-edge research and advocacy programmes
Associate – Research and Policy
(3 positions) – Pune / Bengaluru / Udaipur
- A Master’s degree from a university of repute in the areas of labour studies/economics/ law/ development studies/ public policy/ social work/ gender studies/management
- At least 1- 2 years of experience in being part of research, knowledge and/or policy advocacy initiatives;
- Basic knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative research methods and advanced knowledge in one;
- High quality writing skills is extremely desirable.
Senior Associate – Research
(1 position) – Bengaluru
- A Master’s/MPhil degree from a university of repute in the areas of labour studies/economics/ law/ development studies/ public policy/ social work/ gender studies/management
- At least 4 years of experience in being part of research, knowledge and/or policy advocacy initiatives;
- Experience in designing and operationalizing research projects fairly independently, ability and willingness to work closely with field teams and liason with a range of external stakeholders;
- Good knowledge of both quantitative and qualitative research methods and advanced knowledge in one;
- Excellent writing skills and a past record of independent writing and publishing.
We are seeking colleagues deeply committed to the ideas of labour rights and social justice.
These are not sedentary research positions - a willingness and interest to travel widely and engage with worker communities, networks and stakeholders in the labour practice and policy space is a critical requirement.
The role will be exciting to those who are keen to engage with and contribute to laboring communities and their organisations and wish to make their research and writing stimulate change on the ground.
Candidates with relevant experience in strong labour practice settings such as NGOs, trade unions or workers’ collectives will have a natural advantage at Work Fair and Free.
Remuneration will be commensurate with qualification and experience and compare well with similar institutions.
