About the Course

The growing importance of heritage conservation as an academic subject and a management mandate in National and International agendas indicates a need for professionals to be trained in its approaches. While heritage is broadly classified into the two main groups of natural and cultural heritage, the linkages between the two domains is highly recognizable. The Certificate Course in Heritage Management (CCHM), designed to build capacity in heritage conservation with a focus on natural heritage, will equip the participants with a functional understanding of heritage conservation and the ability to incorporate the same in the management of the heritage sites. The course, with a duration of four weeks, will provide an opportunity for inter-disciplinary learning and will help share the expertise of Wildlife Institute of India (WII) in the field of wildlife conservation and natural heritage management.

This 4-week fully residential programme beginning 12th August, 2024 will be conducted at the biodiverse and forested campus of WII in Dehradun. The course will have a maximum capacity of 15. And, has been designed to impart training in the concepts, theories and practices implemented in the multidisciplinary field of heritage conservation. The course is also designed, through the prism of heritage, to further the understanding of applicable United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Further, the participants will be trained in practical management of heritage and help understand the whys’ and how's of Management Plan prescriptions, and learn techniques for implementing them. The course will include a three-week lecture based session and one week field tour to a natural heritage site. The medium of instruction in the course will primarily be in English.

  • Better knowledge of concepts, theories and practices implemented in the multi-disciplinary field of heritage conservation
  • Improved skills to identify stakeholders in management of World Heritage Sites in the region
  • Ability to promote integrated and sustainable management of World Heritage Sites with participation from multiple stakeholders
  • Incorporation of interpretation tools in planning and management
  • Practical understanding of heritage practice through experiential learning in an inter-disciplinary environment
  • A connection with like-minded professionals, forming a powerful network of changemakers dedicated to safeguarding the natural and cultural heritage

Eligibility

  • The course is open to Indian nationals who are currently involved in managing natural heritage sites and are likely to manage such sites in future. Target participants include forest and wildlife department officers of ranks of the Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF)/ Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF), or their equivalents from other departments in India viz. Culture, Tourism, Archaeology, Geology, Railways.
  • Maximum age limit is 45 years.
  • Candidates must be physically fit to be able to undertake the field tours and travel.

The cost of the course (incl. accommodation, food and tours) will be borne by WIIC2C. Candidates will bear their own travel expenses for arriving at and departure from WII Dehradun.

 The nomination of participants will be through the respective State/Central Government Department following proper official channel. The nominations should be sent by email to contactc2cindia@wii.gov.in

Boarding and lodging facilities will be at the WII guest house and will be on single occupancy basis.
