Applications Invited for Tracking Indian Youth Media Fellowship

Organization: Future of India Foundation

Apply By: 15 Sep 2026

About the Organization

India is the world’s largest democracy and home to one in every five of the planet’s young people. The Future of India Foundation works at the intersection of India’s youth bulge, political economy, and technological transformation to harness India's demographic and democratic dividend. Our flagship initiatives include:

- YouthPOWER: India’s first district-level Youth Opportunity Map and Platform, tracking education, skilling, employment, and local economic outcomes across ~800 districts.

About the Fellowship

The Future of India Foundation invites applications for First Jobs, the fourth cohort of its Tracking Indian Youth Media Fellowship, a four-month remote opportunity for students and young people interested in storytelling, communications, public issues, research, or youth employment to document how young Indians search for, prepare for, and enter their first jobs.

Over the past year, our fellows have documented the lives of their peers, including young workers, first-generation college students, and others navigating early adulthood. Together, they have produced over 150 profiles across 22 states. From a UPSC aspirant studying in isolation to a college student tutoring children to pay her own fees, these stories have captured the aspirations, choices and constraints shaping young lives across India.

In this cohort, the focus will be on the search for a first job. Every two weeks, you will interview a young Indian trying to enter the world of work and turn their experience into a compelling story. You might speak to a college graduate sending out applications, an apprentice learning on the job, a young person preparing for government recruitment, or someone navigating their first months of paid work.

You do not need to be a journalism student or have prior reporting experience. What matters is curiosity, the ability to listen carefully, and an interest in understanding and communicating the experiences of other young people.

Your stories will be featured on our newsletter, website, and social media. You will also participate in regular virtual sessions with journalists and other professionals for guidance, feedback, and insights into interviewing, writing and storytelling.

Fellowship Highlights:

  • Duration: 4 months, remote
  • Output: Two stories per month, based on personal interviews with young job-seekers and people at the beginning of their working lives
  • Each story will be 600–800 words and will include a short video clip or other multimedia material
  • Guidance: Regular virtual interactions with journalists and professionals
  • Publication: Your work will be featured across Future of India Foundation platforms
  • Honorarium: Paid upon successful completion of the full four months and eight stories
  • Other benefits: Certificate and Letter of Recommendation upon completion
