About Cividep:
Cividep India is a Bengaluru based non-profit organization with over two decades of experience working on labour rights and has field offices in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Our work aims to safeguard the rights of communities, especially workers employed in global supply chains. We focus on promoting corporate accountability and improving the conditions of workers in various industries, including the garment, leather, plantation and electronics sectors, among others. Our work encompasses research, advocacy, and capacity-building initiatives to support workers' rights and empower communities affected by corporate activities.
Summary of the project
India Labourline (ILL) is an Alternate Labour Dispute Resolution Mechanism that offers free legal support and mediation services to unorganized sector workers.
The India Labourline program uses a combination of Workers Facilitation Centres (field teams located in 14 cities), Field Fellows (5 cities) and a toll-free helpline number to register labour dispute cases and to undertake mediation.
It facilitates fair dispute resolution through mediation, helping workers and employers/contractors reach mutually acceptable outcomes, while striving to enhance access to labour justice.
Position Purpose:
The Field executive officer will support the outreach efforts of the worker facilitation centre (WFC) in Chennai and work under the overall supervision of the centre coordinator.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Carry out outreach activities and regular field visits to publicize India Labour Line which involves sustained publicity campaign at major nakkas (addas) and industrial clusters using banners, posters and public announcements. Distributing visiting cards advertising the helpline number, along with its services at industrial clusters, transit points including railway stations and inter-state bus stands and in high-migration hotspots as well as residential settlements in the city.
- Analyze the registered cases and follow up of the assigned cases to the ILL center
- Assist Chennai State Facilitation Centre team in mapping of industries, nakkas (addas), labour process involved in particular industries with geographical reach of Chennai Centre. Strategizing the campaigns and outreach activities on the basis of such mapping and categorization
- Assist Chennai SFC coordinator in documentation of cases, mediation and be involved in devising resolution strategies
- Build a rapport and work collaboratively with local trade unions, workers organization and NGO within the geographical reach of the Chennai Centre to ensure publicity of ILL of the communities that they work with
- Attend ILL training programmes and meetings & contribute towards drafting project outcomes and sharing updates in the meeting
- Take interest to build knowledge and understanding on labour rights issues and in learning from the lived experiences of workers and field situations
Qualification, Experience & Skills:
- Bachelors in social sciences, development studies
- Minimum 0-1 years of field experience implementing project_.
- Relevant experience in outreach & interest in labour issues is desirable.
- Fluency in Tamil and English is essential. Working knowledge of Hindi will be an advantage.
- Willingness to travel in and around Chennai, Tamil Nadu as required
