Job Description

  • Head of Biodiversity is a leadership role to envision, plan, execute and monitor Tata Motors Limited (TML) biodiversity strategy across TML locations in India and at off-site project locations, co-opting group companies, suppliers, and channel partners, working closely with CXOs and owner promoters to integrate the strategy and vision of Tata Motors on biodiversity & lead implementation.
  • The Head Biodiversity role will report to the Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) and will take a holistic ownership of strategy development, building domain knowledge within the company and execution under the leadership and guidance of the ExCom with assistance from a wide body of expert knowledge on assorted biodiversity topics (from external sources).
  • The Head of Biodiversity will build subject matter expertise and domain knowledge for deployment across the core elements of the TML biodiversity strategy. These elements include Science based Targets for Nature (SBTN), Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECM), Flagship projects, and Nature-based Solutions (NbS) projects leading to a nature positive status, aligning with the Tata Group's sustainability strategy.
  • The Head of Biodiversity role is responsible for securing budgets, creating roadmaps & executing as per plans, while providing short & long-term guidance and directions for implementation to internal & external stakeholders on biodiversity conservation and management.
  • This role holder will effectively interface between Corporate Sustainability and business & plant locations as well as inspire and co-opt academia, conservation organizations, suppliers, service providers, consultants, customers, government and other stakeholders to achieve TML strategic objectives on biodiversity & will spearhead the deployment of on-site state-of-the-art Nature Interpretation Centre(s) / NIC’s as a beacon of biodiversity excellence for TML and potentially the Tata Group.
  • The Head of Biodiversity will be a visionary leader respected within the organisation, known for working at a population scale to expand our biodiversity footprint, building a case for change, and converting the company’s strategy into tangible, science-enabled goals. This includes laying out a multi-year plan and ensuring its deployment and tracking progress. Understanding biodiversity long term impact creating bandwidth within the organisation by inspiring & motivating employees & their families (blue & white collar) through outreach & volunteering programmes & by closing working with union, CSR, HR, plant teams, co-operative societies, suppliers & channel partners & their leadership through the TML, CV & PV channel network & supply chain Organization

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and deploy TML biodiversity vision and strategy across and beyond TML locations (Pune, Jamshedpur, Sanand, Lucknow, Pantnagar, and Dharwad) for all stakeholders.Develop deployment plans for long term biodiversity strategy for TML & tweak the strategy to co-opt several participants across Tata Group companies, suppliers & network partners to close engagement with CXOs and promoters of business in the Supply chain and TML (CV & PV/EV) channel
  • OECM – Develop strategy and execute plan to obtain OECM certification and ensure its sustenance and enrichment across TML Plants. Lead the plant teams (Horticulture, environment, administration and others) to assess gaps, work towards certification, create governance mechanism, oversee the continued sustenance and enrichment of conservation, conduct periodic reviews and build scientific baselines and documentation for posterity
  • Development of common and plant-specific biodiversity management plans and processes/guidelines with plant teams and its execution
  • Lead the SBTN engagement at the enterprise level, adopt the SBTN methodology, and deploy the same across the value chain and implement initiatives across hotspots to achieve enterprise level goal of nature positive organization
  • Co-ordinate with external organizations to lead flagship projects on wetlands and elephants – including partner engagement, planning, execution, reviewing, facilitation and documentation on ecosystems, biodiversity, keystone species and Nature-based Solutions
  • Drive large scale plantation under Go Green initiative by identifying partners, landscapes, plantation planning, securing budgets, regular site visits and reviews, documentation
  • Develop the Nature Information Centre at Pune and other plants by engaging consultants to develop content, select materials and equipment, and design, develop, and install exhibits, models, interactive displays, as well as develop event calendars, celebrate key days, and manage overall plans
  • Represent team in various audits, certifications related to biodiversity, environment, safety, business excellence, finance etc
  • Ensure timely and regular budgeting, incurrence tracking, monthly reviews, reporting, audits etc
  • Identify subject matter experts and organizations through external scan for strategic and subject specific partnerships

 Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • Candidate with a deep understanding of biodiversity, biodiversity-wildlife conservation irrespective of the base qualification in Biology/Ecology/Environment Science & Engineering or any other Science disciplines.
  • Candidate must possess an in-depth understanding of scientific principles of biodiversity as well as the evolving landscape of related international and national frameworks and protocols such as- GRI 101: Biodiversity 2024, UN Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), the Science Based Target Network (SBTN), Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), CBD & Biodiversity COP protocols, Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), IUCN NbS criteria, National Biodiversity Missions, Ramsar Convention etc.
  • In-depth knowledge of, and an understanding of domestic laws relating to biological diversity, as well as a working knowledge of the regulatory structures, procedures and documentation is preferred.
  • Desired Work Experience: Relevant experience to have envisioned and managed large and complex organisations through influence, knowledge, passion & analysis. In case of a candidate with exceptional aptitude for learning and a missionary attitude, experience could be traded off

Skills & Competencies

  • Stakeholder engagement, strategy development, research and analysis, conservation practice/BMP implementation, in biodiversity & ecology domain.
  • Project management from conceptualization, planning, resource deployment, due-diligence, documentation, reporting and impact measurement.
  • Knowledge and understanding of key biodiversity and environmental laws, national/international protocols, frameworks and targets.
  • Knowledge of Science Based Targets for Nature (SBTN), OECM, Nature-based Solutions.
  • A deep understanding of interrelationships between biodiversity & development agendas to help find appropriate trade-offs where required.
  • Ability to passionately communicate & seek buy-in from internal and external stakeholders (Internal – leadership, employee union office bearers, employees – both office and technical staff and external – academia, conservation organizations, suppliers, channel partners, group companies, government etc.)
  • Proven analytical skills and ability to convert ambiguous information into simplified constructs for resolving conflicting requirements.
  • Ability to work at policy levels to understand and articulate clear policies & guidelines that become the standard operating procedure for Tata Motors & toolkit for others to follow.
  • Proficient in MS Office, Google Earth Pro, AUTOCAD, Arc-GIS, Photoshop or equivalent.
