Essential knowledge and expertise domains:
Background:
Early childhood represents a pivotal period during which children begin to develop their understanding and identification of gender, acknowledging the existence of different gender categories and their affiliation with any category. By the time children enter school, they have already begun internalizing societal gender norms, often reinforcing stereotypes about roles, abilities, and power dynamics. Without intentional interventions, these biases can become deeply ingrained, limiting aspirations and opportunities for both girls and boys.
Gender-transformative programming in primary schools thus becomes essential to address deeply ingrained biases that shape children's perceptions of roles, opportunities, and relationships.
Gender-transformative programming is critical for it actively challenges and reshapes harmful gender norms while addressing power dynamics that sustain inequality. By integrating gender-transformative curricula, teacher training, and participatory learning methods, such programs create environments where both teachers and students can develop equitable attitudes and behaviors and challenge restrictive norms. Gender-transformative programming in schools can play a crucial role in building students’ understanding of gender-based violence (GBV) by fostering critical thinking, empathy, and awareness of power dynamics. By integrating discussions on gender norms, respect, and equality into the curriculum, such programs help young learners recognize how harmful stereotypes and imbalanced power relations contribute to violence and discrimination. Schools serve as influential spaces for socialization, making them ideal platforms to instill values of gender equity early on, ultimately contributing to a more just and equal society in the long run.
