About the Organization

The Centre for Budget and Policy Studies (CBPS), established in Bangalore, India, in February 1998, is an independent, non-partisan, not-for-profit society, registered under the Societies Registration Act. It focuses on public policy and finance, including budgets, governance, and service delivery. Founded by academics, activists, and former civil servants, CBPS aims to create and share knowledge for a more empowered, equitable, and democratic society.

Job Description

We currently have an opening for an Economist and are looking for suitable applicants. The selected person would be employed at the position of Senior Research Advisor/Research Advisor/Senior Research Associate depending on the years of previous work experience and will be primarily entrusted with quantitative and / or qualitative research in the organisation. Our remuneration packages are competitive with academic positions in various Indian institutions and universities. We provide Provident Fund, Gratuity, Medical cover, and a few allowances in addition to salary. We encourage and cherish diversity.

Job Responsibilities

• Lead projects/ be part of projects that the organisation undertakes and contribute to economic analysis
• Act as a subject matter expert in Economics within the organisation and be able to represent the organisation externally. Stay updated on latest research, best practices, and policies related to economics and economic analysis and integrate them into research.
• Contribute to the interdisciplinary conception and execution of research and capacity building projects
• Actively collaborate and network with like-minded organisations for research and advocacy purposes
• Actively develop proposals for fundraising and effectively communicate with the funders and other partner organisations.
• Identify the capacity building needs of the researchers and develop training modules or conduct short-term training exercises to enhance their understanding and skills in delivering research outcomes, particularly in the context of economics and research methodologies.
• Work towards institutional building by contributing to organisational policy development and administration.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

• Preferred educational qualifications are PhD. or Master’s in Economics/Master’s in Development Economics/Financial Economics/Economics and Public Policy/ Agricultural Economics/Applied Economics

Required Skill Sets:

• Knowledge /understanding of economics and economic analysis
• Robust knowledge and understanding of research methods
• Skill in the use of data analysis software (STATA, R etc), preferably
• Familiar with large scale data sets such as NSSO, NFHS, MoSPI etc.
• Ability to work in multi-disciplinary teams and projects.
• Must be good at handling large data sets in MS Excel.
• Proficiency in English and two regional languages (preferably).
• Excellent management and organisational skills
