Job Description
This senior staff position will be based in Guinea, and will work within the Policy, Access, and Introduction (PAI) functional area of CVIA initially supporting introduction and scale up of malaria and HPV vaccines in Guinea and the West Africa Region. In addition, this person will be provided with additional support by PATH’s regional office in Dakar, Senegal to ensure effective integration into PATH’s regional presence in West Africa. In general, this person will focus on supporting West African countries with HPV vaccine.
Job Responsibilities
New vaccine introduction or switching
- Facilitate country decision making processes on malaria and HPV vaccine introduction. In the case of HPV, this may also include “switch” decision making (e.g. two dose schedule to one dose schedule) through the gathering and dissemination of relevant data, evidence, learnings, and policies, and other information in collaboration with national coordinating mechanisms such as NITAGs and TWGs, and global stakeholders such as WHO and UNICEF.
- Coordinate, plan, and provide key stakeholders with technical support, training, and guidance for malaria and HPV vaccine introduction. Support MOH in evaluating introduction activities and progress, including conducting post introduction evaluations.
- Assist as requested by MOH or other stakeholders for completing funding applications to Gavi and/or other donors.
- Develop curricula and provide training and education of health care workers, community-based organizations, and other partners to support vaccine service delivery.
Communications and stakeholder relations
- Represent and serve as a primary technical liaison with MOH National Vaccines and Immunization Program (NVIP) staff, Malaria Control Programs, technical working groups, relevant global stakeholders (e.g., WHO, UNICEF, Gavi), and other international organizations and professional, research and academic institutions in Guinea and other West African countries.
- Collect and disseminate scientific and public health information on malaria and HPV vaccines, through presentations to congresses, scientific sessions, groups of medical professionals, and various advisory groups.
Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience
- Advanced training in medicine, epidemiology, or public health with 5-10 years relevant experience.
- Significant experience working with MOH NVIP, Gavi, WHO, UNICEF, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other international organizations promoting vaccination
- Experience with new vaccine introduction preferred.
- Experience with or knowledge of technical aspects of malaria control preferred.
- Ability to engage MOH with key stakeholders in other West African countries especially within the Francophone zone.
- A team player with the capacity to multi-task
- Proficiency in both French and English required.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
- Strong technical skills and knowledge on vaccines and immunization, immunization delivery systems (e.g. planning, service delivery, data systems, cold chain, supply/logistics etc.).
- Knowledge of new vaccine introduction process and the various measurement of success of an immunization program.
- Knowledge of malaria and/or HPV vaccines preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills. Collaborative and able to build effective partnerships (internally and externally)
- Experience in surveys, post introduction evaluations is highly desirable.
- Strong networks with MOHs in West Africa with the ability to gather intelligence and effectively inform and support decision making at Ministry levels.
