Job Description

A core member of the programme management team with responsibility for design and implementation of the public engagement strategy and activities for the programme. The broad objectives of these activities will be to address broader conversations around mental health stigma and encourage help-seeking among students; invite participation of students in Delhi/NCR across the various programme activities, including applications to be trained and supported as peer counsellors, youth researchers and ambassadors. This role will lead dissemination of key findings from METROPOLIS via a range of outputs and events targeting specialist, lay and youth audiences.

The role will liaise with programme collaborators and youth partners to implement youth involvement, outreach, awareness building and study recruitment activities. A priority will be to actively seek out and involve seldom heard and underrepresented student groups in New Delhi.

The post-holder will be provided opportunities for professional development in mental health research methods and leadership building and attendance at relevant national conferences. The post-holders will also be part of Sangath’s Youth Mental Health Group (YMHG), a research group comprising researchers, health workers, social scientists, public engagement specialists, and students. The purpose of YMHG is to enable capacity development and foster collaboration on high-quality evidence-based research related to youth mental health.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership of the public engagement component of the METROPOLIS programme working closely with the research team and external partners.
  • Responsible for designing, facilitating implementation, monitoring and evaluation of public engagement activities part of the METROPOLIS programme in university settings, public spaces and online.
  • Develop MoUs and contracts with collaborators, partners and vendors.
  • Oversee online and in-person student-focused campaigns, an annual public engagement festival and any outreach events.
  • Work closely with the It’s Ok To Talk programme at Sangath to invite and support development of personal story contributions and disseminate these via blogs and films for METROPOLIS.
  • Support digitisation of the METROPOLIS intervention training materials over the last two years of the programme.
  • Explore potential future opportunities for communication/engagement through engagement with key health/education stakeholders, researchers and members of the public.
  • Support the PI and international collaborators in media engagement and liaison for dissemination of research.
  • Prepare/draft write-ups as may be required for inclusion in/ to support proposals, posters, presentations/seminars, IEC materials (including website content) and publications.

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • A Master’s degree or higher in a relevant discipline (communications/ journalism/ public relations/ public policy/ psychology/ social science/ health/ community development)
  • Experience of at least 5+ years of delivering communications and engagement within a large and complex organisation with multiple stakeholders
  • Proven track record of successfully designing and implementing programmes to engage diverse audiences; using a variety of methods and channels to reach and engage diverse and hard-to-reach audiences.
  • Good inter-personal skills and ability to network, build and maintain strong relationships
  • Experience of working on visual content for scientific/health communication media (e.g. websites, video, magazines, policy briefs, newspaper articles etc.) in a variety of styles to suit different audiences
  • Excellent familiarity with modern and best practice approaches to communication, knowledge exchange and information management
  • Excellent presentation skills (use of PowerPoint or other media including video), excellent quality of written work in English
  • Ability to work with limited supervision to meet deadlines.
