About the Organization

Wildlife Conservation Society - India (WCS-India) is a Section 25 non-profit company incorporated in India and compliant with all Indian regulations. In accordance with the global mission, our overarching goal is to protect and conserve the natural environment, its flora and fauna, and in particular to preserve wildlife and wild places in India. We combine wildlife conservation action and strategic policy interventions with rigorous principles of conservation science and forge long-lasting productive partnerships with governmental and non-governmental partners as well as with local communities. Our conservation action addresses the overarching threats of habitat fragmentation, poaching and wildlife trade, as well as human-wildlife interactions, which impact our biodiversity and its habitats.

Job Description

The Research Intern will be onboarded immediately after screening interviews for a period of six months. If the selected candidate is Bengaluru-based, then the candidate will be expected to visit the WCS-India office a minimum of twice a week. If the selected candidate is Goa-based, then a hybrid schedule can be worked out accordingly. The Research Intern will be expected to learn about corals and coral reef biology. The Intern will be taught the necessary skills for data validation and analysis of the project. At the end of six months, if the Intern demonstrates adequate potential and interest, there will be an opportunity to extend the agreement. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Learn to identify corals and study coral reef biology.
  • Assist project team in data validation, analysis and managing project database.
  • Run exploratory analysis for project-related academic outputs.
  • Prepare creatives from project data.
  • Assist team members in all project activities and not limited to social media deliverables, report writing etc. 
  • Collaborate with members of the Marine Programme on shared deliverables, wherever necessary. 

Education Qualification/Required Skills & Experience

  • Master’s degree in Zoology, Marine Biology and/ or allied Lifesciences
  • Prior experience in wildlife research (internship/ volunteering)
  • Language proficiency: English
  • Good working knowledge of MS Office.

Desired skills and competencies:

  • Demonstrated interest in coral reef ecology.
  • Prior experience in species identification, data logging, managing databases and exploratory analysis. 
  • Prior experience in producing creatives – e.g., infographics, posters, and other outreach material.
  • Desired Language Proficiency: Konkani 
  • Fluency in analytical and exploratory software such as R, QGIS or ArcGIS.
  • Demonstrated experience in science writing.
